O’Rourke welcomes support for Ashbourne Community Park motion Cllr. Darren O’Rourke has welcomed the unanimous support received at Ashbourne Municipal District for a motion calling for Meath County Council to explore the possibility of providing a public park in Ashbourne town. The motion also called on the Local Authority to ensure that outstanding commitments from developers, including providing a linear park along the Broadmeadow River, are pursued and delivered. Cllr. ORourke said; During the recent Local Election campaign the lack of a suitable, publicly provided, community/green space was raised with me time and again. I think it is a very reasonable request, given that Ashbourne has a population of over 12,000 people and is now the second largest town in Co. Meath. To have a communal green space for families and individuals to walk, to play, to sit and relax, and in safe and scenic surroundings is something which I think is achievable and very desirable. Meath County Council, in their response, stated that they are conscious that a community area would be a welcome addition to the amenity infrastructure of Ashbourne town and environs and acknowledged that there are sites in the town, in both private and public ownership, which could be considered for such a project. They have committed to explore these options. Separately, they further acknowledged that the Killegland area of Ashbourne was identified previously for the purpose of developing a park along the Broadmeadow but that the downturn in the economy over the past number of years meant that the provision of any works in relation to the proposed park has yet to commence. I welcome the unanimous support for the motion. In the first instance it calls on Meath County Council to pursue the developers in question to make sure they live up to their commitments to deliver a linear park along the Broadmeadow for the people of Ashbourne. Separately, further exploration of the possibility of providing a community park will now be undertaken by the Council also.
