Island Breeze National Leader, Waqa Baravilala writes: The RugbyPlus Clinic in Vanuatu, funded by the PACMAS Innovation Fund, has been blessed with the presence of the tallest man in the Pacific, Kali Seleiwau from Ba, Fiji. Seleiwau and several prominent Pacific rugby coaches and educators are in the country emphasising the need for a healthy and disciplined lifestyle to improve performance on the rugby field. In the Clinic last week, IRB Rugby Educator from Fiji, Eddie Waqa ran the certificate course for level-1 coaching for rugby-sevens, now an Olympic sport. Other workshop facilitators include the former Wallaby Flanker, Ilivasi Tabua who is the Head of International Rugby for Island Breeze Rugby Plus, and Fiji Rugby Plus Leader and Sports Chaplain, Lasarusa Nasenaivalu. Each day was divided into 3-hours of classroom sessions, 2-hours of practical rugby drills and an hour’s visit to communities at the end of the day. The community visits include visiting rugby teams and running basic rugby clinics with them or going to villages in Port Vila’s periphery, to those who are quite involved in rugby. In the villages, the Rugby Plus Team highlighted issues that affect players outside the rugby field, and how the village community can create an environment to prevent players succumbing to bad habits. During the Community focused talks, over a hundred people gathered and listened to the presentations. Guest speakers were also invited to present during the classroom sessions. Participants learnt about dealing with injuries and keeping fit when the Sports Physio at the Department of Health presented. A police officer elaborated on the rule of law and issues affecting the youth, and stating that it’s an opportunity for collaborations between the police and the rugby community to combat these issues. It has been a successful start to the two weeks of clinics in Vanuatu. Clinics continue this week as our professional team of Coaches and Chaplains from Australia and Fiji, along with the Vanuatu Rugby Plus Leaders John and Annie Kalo reach out to more players and community groups.
