PAINS OF PROCRASTINATION Boast not thyself of tomorrow; for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth. (Proverbs 27:1) Some years ago, an economist, George Akerlof was faced with a simple task: mailing a box of clothes from India, where he was living, to the United states. The clothes belonged to his colleague Joseph Stiglitz, who had left them behind when visiting. But there was a problem. The combination of Indian bureaucracy and what Akerlof called my own ineptitude in such matters meant that doing so was going to be a hassle. This went on week after week for more than eight months, and it was only shortly before Akerlof himself returned home that he managed to solve his problem: another friend happened to be sending some things back to the U.S, and Akerlof was able to add Stiglitzs clothes to the shipment. Theres something comforting about this story: even Nobel-winning economists procrastinate! Many of us go through life with an array of undone tasks, large and small, nibbling at our conscience. What you need to do today, do it with dispatch. Be urgent and diligent in your work. Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might;... (Ecclesiastes 9:10) Challenge: Procrastination creates backlog of unfinished tasks. Prayer: Lord, help me to be conscious of time. Further Reading: James 4:13-17
