PART 3 I use to think I was the only one who had a stare that could freeze the world, my heart skipped as he came menacingly towards me... He folded his heavy looking palms into a big ball of fist as my heart was pounding. I was afraid my rib-cage would burst open. The little woman quickly stood in front of me, Taju, control your ego! She screamed. The beast stopped short. He gnashed his teeth and then snarled at her, I dont take orders from you. You want to ever earn a dime, you better be on your best behaviour around me, she threw back at him, help your boss up. He threw a cold stare at me and bent over to raise the Policeman up. Then sat him upright and revived him. He slowly came to as he looked around. Then he suddenly realized what happened, he sprang up from his seat as Taju held him. Boss, everything is under control, The Policeman turned around and then sighed. He managed to sit down as he pulled an handkerchief from his pocket. There was a pool of blood forming at the corner of his mouth. He dabbed it with the handkerchief. Enigma, I heard you could hit, but I never knew you were this strong. He said. My mouth turned sour. No one knew me by the name ENIGMA. It was a name I was known by during the time of my hey-days. A name that struck terror in the hearts of Policemen. A name that opened doors of the underworld. A name I no longer bear after serving 12 years in prison. I think you have got me mixed up with someone else, I said, trying to be casual. I have got the right person... He said, smiling at him. He looked boyish when he smiled, he reminded of Jackie, my right hand man during my reign as the king of the underworld. ...I did all my homework. You were the most fearless of all the kingpins of the underworld. You were a mystery that took nearly 2 decades for the Police to solve. You were a ghost who never left any breadcrumb or any fallen man behind... He paused to looked at me then beckoned to Taju. ... Do you have a stick of cigarette on you? My mouth is turning sour... Yea boss, he said as he fished for a pack of cigarrette in his pocket, then offered him one and lighted it. The Policeman dragged on it for a few seconds and blow the smokes up. ... The perfect word to qualify you is you were like the smoke.. He grinned boyishly. An act that was getting under my skin. He sighed, then dragged on the cigarette again. Then winked at the lady who hissed. As I was saying before your rudely interrupted by nearly putting me to sleep. I have a very simple job for you. And you will be well rewarded. He said, then paused, as he dragged on the cigarette again. I am done with crime, I said in clench teeth, I am not going to jail for no one. He sighed, Is that so? He asked shaking his leg, Maybe you dont know the gravity of your crime yet. Let me explain in English to you. He stood iup, then picked up the nylon bag that held the supposed evidences. This tape has evidence of putting you away for years, breaking and entry is a crime. Then this murder weapon would add another thick blanket of years to your sentence in the joint. He sniffed, then coughed. You see, you killing your boss and her mistress in her mistress house is not good, its even worse when such mistress is the wife of a Major general...and judging by the fact that you were once the most wanted man in Nigeria once, all these are not hard to prove in the law court. He sighed as shook his left leg, then sat down and then grinned at me. This bastard has me boxed into a corner. There wasnt anything I could do about it, except I do the job. I sighed, then for the first time, sat down of my own accord. Can I have a smoke please?! I said politely. Not on your life! Snarled Taju. Hey! Dont scream at our business Partner Taju, learn to be civil. Said the Policeman, give him a stick and light it too. Reluctantly, he handed me a stick of cigarette. Meanwhile, I was calculating what my options were. The only obstacle I have is this ape-looking beast. I could take the Policeman all alone, I could try to take the body-guard, but it wont be an easy task. I sighed. So Enigma, what do you have to say? Asked the Policeman, choosing his words carefully. I grinded my teeth as my fist turned into a ball. I restrained myself from the temptation of sending a blinding blow to his face. I am not Enigma, I replied. Changing your name and appearance still dont change anything, does it? Asked Taju. In my heydays, I would have had your head for breakfast! I snarled at him. Taju, stay out of this, barked the Policeman sternly. Then he turned to me, are you in or out? Do I have any option? I asked. He scoffed, the answer is obvious, was his reply. I sighed, so what is the job about? I asked. Dont worry it is a very simple task, he said, you wont be alone, Taju will be there with you. I scoffed, your bundle of muscles is an excess baggage. I dont need one. Sorry baby, you are stuck with me, he said, licking his dry lips. Whats the nature of the job? I asked again. Well, in time you will know. Said the Policeman, he nodded to Taju, who came close to me, he brought out a handcuff. Your hands, he barked. Be nice to the man, the woman spoke, after all this while. Listen to her, added the Policeman, then he turned to me, just in case you get any funny ideas. This is just a preventive measure. He cuffed me to the bed and then asked for the car key, then disappeared and re-appeared a few minutes later breathing heavily. He must have been scared I had broken loose again. He handed the Policeman a big envelope and then came towards me and loosened the cuffs. Here is two hundred grand, get yourself a gun and some nice clothes and then expect a call from me in the next 3 days. He said as he threw the envelope at me. Here... He threw a car key at me, the jeep on the third street is your ride from now on. Get going, I have dead people to take care of. I stood up and then strolled out of the room with the envelope, and the car keys, then remembered my phone. Can I have my phone back? I asked. Oh! I totally forgot, he dipped his hand into the nylon bag and then fished out the phone, he extended it to me, no funny business! He said with a snarl. I grabbed my phone from him and strolled out of the room and into the corridor and down the stairs, I paused at the door leading outside. I breathed in as I walked out into the dark night...
