PARTING SHOT... A lot of attention’s been focused on Michael Brown and Ferguson, Missouri, this week. Maybe some of that attention should be focused on El Paso, too. CBS News reports that many border patrol agents are trigger happy, too. And have also shot and killed immigrants, some of them children, attempting to cross the border. Since 2010, according to CBS, border agents have shot and killed 28 people, twelve of whom were unarmed. In perhaps the worst example, 16-year old Jose Antonio Rodriguez was shot eight times in the back by a border agent. The agent claims he was throwing stones. Eyewitnesses said he was just walking by. Worse yet, the border agent who shot Rodriguez has not been identified and is still on the job. And that’s just part of the cover-up. A former federal official told CBS he tried to get the Border Patrol to investigate and discipline the officers involved. Instead, they fired him. So, it’s important to crack down on local police departments. But let’s crack down on the Border Patrol, too. That’s my parting shot for today. I’m Bill Press.
