PASSING THIS ALONG FROM IDA: Here at IDA, we are horrified by what is happening to America’s last wild horses at the behest of cattle ranching interests. Wild horses should be left in their home, but this is not being allowed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), so they are being rounded up and imprisoned. Were reaching out to our supporters for help in finding homes for 22 wild horses who will be sent to the slaughter auction in less than a month if permanent placement is not found. These horses are descended from the very horses that inspired Velma Johnston, a.k.a Wild Horse Annies, crusade to save Americas wild horses, which resulted in the passing of the Wild Free Roaming Horse and Burro Act in 1971. Return to Freedom and American Wild Horse Preservation Campaign (AWHPS) have a cooperative agreement with the Nevada Department of Agriculture (NDA) that allows them to acquire horses directly from the state and place them with rescues or individuals so that the horses do not have to go through the horrendous auction process and advocates are not forced to outbid kill buyers. Over the past two years, 170 wild horses captured by the NDA have been rescued, including 23 under the direct care of AWHPC. Local rescues are full and cannot absorb these additional horses, which means that they will be sent to the livestock auction and probably shipped out of the country and brutally killed at a slaughterhouse, if safe haven is not found, After being captured by the NDA from their homes on the Virginia Range in northern Nevada, these 22 horses currently waiting at the Carson City prison for placement include Bond and his family, pictured here.
