PAST, PRESENT, AND FUTURE OF SHELLFISH CULTURE EUREKA, CA—Susana Munzell, Chair of the Humboldt Bay Harbor Working Group (HBHWG) announces that Adam Wagschal, M.S. will present “The Past, Present, and Future of Shellfish Culture in Humboldt County and Job Opportunities” at the August lunch forum to be held at the Samoa Cookhouse at 12 p.m. (noon) on Wednesday, August 28, 2013. Adam Wagschal, M.S. is a Senior Fish Ecologist at H.T. Harvey and Associates (harveyecology/) and was the Conservation Director of the Harbor District until 2010. Projects Adam was successful in getting funding for and managing included a Resource Legacy Fund Foundation grant to conduct a collaborative fisheries research project to examine how fish communities differ at varying distances from major ports on the California North Coast, a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service collaborative agreement for control of the non-native species Spartina denisflora, a Humboldt County Headwaters Fund grant to contract and oversee a study to characterize the socioeconomics of the North Coast Fishing Industry, and a Resources Legacy Fund Foundation grant to work with community stakeholder groups to develop preliminary Marine Protected Area (MPA) design alternatives for California’s North Coast. The HBHWG organizes a no-host lunch forum the last Wednesday of each month to educate the community on activities and possibilities on and around the Humboldt Bay Harbor. Past presentation topics have included the overview of the Harbor, Artificial Reef Development, current Harbor and Port projects, agricultural cargo, and short sea shipping. The public is encouraged to come learn and ask questions. Lunch is optional. On August 28th, lunch will feature roasted pork, potatoes, and corn for $12.95; or, soup and salad for $9.95. The lunch begins at 12 p.m. (noon) and ends at 1:30 p.m. with the presentation at 12:45 p.m. Attendees are requested to RSVP by calling Karen Brooks at 822-7736 by Monday, August 26, 2013. The Samoa Cookhouse is located off Cookhouse Road the first street south of the Samoa Bridge on the peninsula.
