PAY DOCTORS AND NURSES GHC100,000 A MONTH - AND ILL ENDORSE IT Dear Nyaba I am at the emergency ward at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital. Nyaba, Korle Bu is the biggest herbal center in all of the former Gold Coast where, you will find all the best herbalists (they call them doctors here). Yes, the word “doctor” can be a very confusing term in the concrete jungle. It also refers to people who have read and researched and written books and articles, which end up only on book shelves, never to be touched by anyone ever again. So, as I was saying, I am at the herbal center to see some of our kinsmen who have been battling with ill health. Nyaba, God the healer has put his hand on them and they are out of danger. Nyaba, I have revised all my notes concerning all chief herbalists and their assistants. Not all of them are “bad” and “rude”. Our sister’s son who was with me on the visit to the hospital has even been contemplating feigning sick in order to “enjoy” some of the pampering from the herbalists and their assitants – they call them nurses here. When a young woman walked into the room a few minutes ago, tall with long hair, a pointed nose, that looked slender under the designer spectacles she wore, an almost mini skirt worn under a sleeveless blouse, our sister’s son, was woowed. He thought she was one of those “dadabees” in town until she collected a certain metal that performs the whiteman’s wizardry by making it possible to listen to the heartbeat of others, and begun to place it on the chests of some of the ill people here, that he came to know that she indeed was one of the chief herbalists. She spoke softly and smiled at every patient. Not long after, at the entrance to the alleyway, an ambulance screeched to a halt, a gurney hurtled through the hallway and I could count about five chief herbalists frantically working to save a persons life with only seconds to spare. The relatives appeared tensed and helpless. Soon there was an apparent sigh of relief. The patient had begun to breathe again!!! Thank you chief herbalists and your assistants, you just saved another life, another bread winner. You just brought smiles back to another family. NB: I just discovered that the biggest asset I have is not the 14 inch TV that sits in my room, neither is it the 1982 VW beetle i ride in. Its not the single room i reside in, neither is it the number of degrees and certificates hanging on my wall. Nyaba, my biggesst asset is health not wealth.
