PDP MAY EXPEL BARAJE, OTHERS Following the seeming breakdown of truce talks between the warring parties in the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the party appears set to wield the big stick: it plots the expulsion of the leadership of the factional group that was suspended on Monday. Those suspended by the PDP’s National Working Committee (NWC) are Abubakar Kawu Baraje, Olagunsoye Oyinlola, Sam Sam Jaja and Ibrahim Kazaure who were chairman, secretary, deputy chairman and zonal vice-chairman respectively of the breakaway “new PDP”. But the planned expulsion of the factional leadership of the “new PDP” is coming on the heels of reports that the four suspended leaders have rejected the action which came three days after the Court of Appeal in Abuja ordered the reinstatement of Oyinlola as national secretary of the PDP. They have also vowed not to appear before the Umaru Dikko-led Disciplinary Committee of the party. As PDP mulls the ultimate disciplinary measure, an embattled Oyinlola has described his suspension as an affront on the judiciary, saying it ridicules the judicial system. A member of the PDP BoT who sought anonymity said the suspended members risk expulsion from the party if they carried out their threat to ignore the invitation of the Disciplinary Committee. “The party has directed them to appear before the Disciplinary Committee to justify their actions in violation of the party’s constitution; let them go in their own interest and, if they carry out their threat, I can assure you that their expulsion from the party would be recommended to the NEC and they would all be disposed of. This is a new era; the era of anything goes is over in the PDP,” he said. On the fate of the G-7 governors, the source said: “They know that it’s in their interest to embrace the ongoing reconciliation initiated by President Goodluck Jonathan; and if they too remain adamant, they would face similar treatment because no one is above the laws of the party. “Let the so-called G-7 governors accept their faults, apologise and be forgiven if they want to remain with our party; let them return to the party or face the consequence. Let them go to their APC and try one-third of what they are trying here and see what would follow. Let them go; enough of their empty threats.” LEADERSHIP
