PDP Spokesman, Olisa Metuh, resigns The National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Olisa Metuh, has formally announced his decision to resign his position. Mr. Metuh announced his resignation at a brief press conference on Thursday in Abuja, saying he would throw in the towel on Thursday at the party’s National Executive Committee, NEC, meeting. “I want to inform you that I am resigning as the National Publicity Secretary with effect from Thursday 20th June 2013,” he said. “This resignation is in the overall interest of the party and is being done to put a final stop to the controversies generated by the INEC report on the mode of my election as National Publicity Secretary. “I have served this party as a member of National Executive Committee for over 10 years and therefore my interest is to ensure that this party stabilizes and progress. I have written and submitted my letter; I am resigning with effect from Thursday 20th June 2013.” INEC, in its report on the 2012 National Convention of PDP, faulted the elections of some of the party’s National Working Committee, NWC, members, including Mr. Metuh. A committee set up by President Goodluck Jonathan also asked that all those in the INEC report be asked to resign from office. The outgoing PDP spokesman said that other national officers whose elections at the convention were faulted by the Commission would also quit. He, however, added that the National Chairman, Bamanga Tukur was not affected by the Commission’s report and would not vacate his office. “The National Chairman is not going to resign; he is not only in office but in power,” Mr. Metuh said. “There is no controversy about his election, he is not in court. The INEC report did not say his election was flawed. He complied with the Constitution of the party and the guideline of the 2012 convention.” Mr. Metuh thanked President Goodluck Jonathan, Mr. Tukur, state governors, members of the National Assembly, leaders of the party from the South-east and PDP elders for assisting him while in office. He said: “I have noted that the PDP is the only party that can safeguard democracy in Nigeria, in whatever capacity I may find myself, I will always vote and support the PDP.” Meanwhile, a member of the party from the South East geo-political zone where the position of the National Publicity Secretary was zoned to, Chyna Iwuanyanwu, has declared his interest in the position. Mr. Iwuanyanwu, who showed interest in the position last year, told journalists on Wednesday that with the development in the party, God has provided another opportunity for him to contest for the position. “With the recent develops in PDP, God has provided another opportunity to do it right. As we watch the situations unfold. I want to confirm my interest in the National Publicity Secretary which I contested in 2012 National Convention,” Mr. Iwuanyanwu said.
