PDP slams Edo govt over teachers’ strike Edo State chapter of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has flayed what it said was the indifference of the state government to the ongoing teachers’ strike, saying that the government was toying with the future of the younger generation. The party, in a statement, said it was regrettable that the state government had not been able to meet its responsibilities and has rather been playing the ostrich. Chairman of the party, Chief Dan Orbih, reacting to the teachers’ strike in Edo and eight other states, following the failure of the states to meet their commitment to the teachers, said: “It is shameful that Edo State Government cannot meet its basic financial obligations, such as payment of teachers’ salaries and allowances. For the records, Edo State Government was paying 17 per cent to teachers, instead of the 27 and a half per cent approved by the TSA. “Even the paltry 17 per cent is now proving to be too much financial burden for an apparently broke state government. What is more, the Action Congress of Nigeria ACN-led government, in a bid to cut financial corners, has in the last five years halted the promotion of teachers and other civil servants.” He said it is an irony that Governor Adams Oshiomhole, a product of labour, is now waging war with the unions.
