PECs is ABA too - article by Andy Bondy, PECs co-creator For anyone who comes across SALTs saying they love PECs but hate that awful ABA, have a read of this article, wherein Andy Bondy tells clearly how PECs comes directly from Skinner and VB (Verbal Behaviour) - which is just a form of ABA. Isnt it odd how PECs is seen as a goody and widely adopted throughout the UK, while its daddy ABA is still seen as the bad guy?! (We suspect that it is because people confuse PECs with visual timetables - due to both using pictures - and visual timetables obvs get a tick because they are part of Teacch). Also, PECS takes less training (=less £s) as it is just one component of an overall ABA or VB education. Views welcome. Many people use PECs wrongly of course, as replacement for, rather than precursor to words. The PECS protocol and training sequence are based on the analysis offered by Skinner (1957) in his seminal work, Verbal Behavior. The training sequence begins by addressing simple requests, or mands, and then moves through a series of steps to involve generalization, picture discrimination, simple sentence construction, expanding vocabulary via attributes and other qualifiers, responding to requests by others, and commenting, or tacting.
