PERCEPTION… Part 9 Numbers 14: 33 … we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight.” Two categories of students were selected by researchers, students with high IQ and students with low IQ. The low IQ students were told they are the best students, while the high IQ students were told that they are poor performers. Over a period of time their performance was monitored. It turned out that the high IQ students performed poorly, while the low IQ students performed excellently well. (1)The most important perception is how you see yourself. If you perceive yourself correctly as God sees you, you will perceive God and your problem correctly. David had a healthy perception about himself, he said Psalms 139:14 “ I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well. “ When he was to face goliath, he exuded a healthy perception about himself. He did not allow the perception of his brother, or even King Saul about him, to stop him from his day of destiny. 1Samuel 17:28 And Eliab his eldest brother heard when he spake unto the men; and Eliab’s anger was kindled against David, and he said, Why camest thou down hither? and with whom hast thou left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know thy pride, and the naughtiness of thine heart; for thou art come down that thou mightest see the battle. 1Samuel 17:29 And David said, What have I now done? Is there not a cause? Some use their perception of others as a tool of manipulation, pulling the strings of their captive at will. Sycophants, men pleasers and so on are also experts, in dispensing praise or insults. The battle between Saul and David was kindled when Saul listened to the womenfolk’s song. It is a tragedy to be a captive of the perception of others. (2) Perceptions can cripple or empower. Many have allowed the opinions of others to stop them, from the greatness that God has in stock for them. Teachers told them they cannot excel in academics and they foreclose it. Parents said they are no good and they behave true to type. People said they will not amount to anything and they act out the script. The world will try to put you into a mould, it is your duty to break that mould and live a life beyond limits. (3) Your believe in yourself must outweigh the negative opinion of people. Consider Jesus: For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, He hath a devil. The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, Behold a man gluttonous, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners. But wisdom is justified of her children. – Matthew 11:17 -19. If you don’t believe in yourself nobody will, whatever your vocation or calling is, you are your best salesman and the product you sell is you. You are a product of your thoughts, actions, choices, perception and so on. Your words, gestures and confidence accessorize you. Your actions or inactions leave an impression. (4) Consider yourself a work-in-progress, there is always room for improvement. Examine, if the negative perception, was triggered by something you are doing that is not right, which may result in a negative perception and make amends. (5) Surround yourself with people who believe in you and what you can accomplish. When you are surrounded by people who believe in your abilities, you will accomplish more. Finally, Mark 8:24 And he looked up, and said, I see men as trees, walking. Mark 8:25 After that he put his hands again upon his eyes, and made him look up: and he was restored, and saw every man clearly. May you correctly define every problem, perceive God and yourself more correctly and refuse to live by the negative perception of others.
