PESCI POINT: Difference b/w privacy and confidentiality Privacy - TopicsExpress

PESCI POINT: Difference b/w privacy and confidentiality Privacy is a person’s desire to control the access of others to themselves. Confidentiality is the assurance that certain information would not be disclosed without patient’s permission. (There are exceptions to the rule!) Privacy protects access to the person, whereas confidentiality protects access to the data. Both in PESCI and AMC Clinical the application of difference between privacy and confidentiality is checked smartly! Example: Tina, a 15 year old student presents to your clinic with three of her friends and is concerned for tiny acne on her cheek. How will you proceed? Explanation: Apart from many other points this particular stem has an agenda to check candidate’s ability to display his/her awareness in relation to the privacy and the confidentiality of the patient. A competent candidate would paraphrase: I can see that I am dealing with a teenager student “Tina” who has come to see me with three of her friends and is concerned for her tiny facial acne. After a little pause he can say that: Before I start asking open ended questions to find out Tina’s ideas, concerns and expectations, I would like to deal with the issues of her privacy and confidentiality. I can ensure her privacy and confidentiality by asking her if “I can request her friends to stay out while I am consulting her as I may need to ask some personal questions”. If she is happy to have a consultation done in the presence of her friends I will document her verbal consent and can start further conversation. Dear Guys Be aware that each and every scenario in PESCI is especially designed to check at least two domains of general practice. Can you guess which two domains are checked in this case?
