PHILS OBSCURE ARCHIVE (11) - JOY DIVISION -- AT A LATER DATE (live). Most of the punk era material that Im familiar with isnt exactly rare, apart from a couple of Merseyside bands I enjoyed working with.On the other hand a great deal of what followed punk is far less well known. Early Joy Division perhaps straddles both ideals; theres no doubt that they were always striving for more than the basics, even when they didnt know what that more entailed, and therein lies their charm. I may be the first person to use charm in relation to Joy Division. The bands first release was an EP An Ideal For Living(1978) which shows the thought processes already reaching into the unknown, but just a few months earlier they were recorded live as part of a sampler Short Circuit:Live At The Electric Circus, and released shortly after their own EP. It shows them as a punk band about to lift off into something else, and the intensity is as good a piece of punk as Ive heard. Its the only track on this thread which is not (yet) part of my collection, as I found it while researching something else. Great fun though! https://youtube/watch?v=ceHzceD8QpQ
