Karaba Brick Quarry © David Pace LensCulture Visual Storytelling Awards 2014 | Entrant https://lensculture/awards Karaba is a rural West African village without electricity or running water located in the southwest corner of Burkina Faso. Outside the village, a short distance from the dusty main road, is a quarry where men carve bricks from solid stone using only picks and shovels. Measurements are made using simple sticks cut to uniform sizes. Ladders are made from trees. Axe handles are hewn from branches. The Karaba quarry has been in constant use for nearly thirty years. Its history is etched into the walls that tower above the workers. The bricks, loaded into wagons and taken to nearby villages, are the basic building blocks for the homes, buildings and walls that structure the surrounding communities. #international #photography #awards #competition #documentary #personal #stories #open #inspiration
