PICO BONITO, La Ceiba, HONDURAS: This national park is one of the richest with biodiversity in Honduras. Beginning in coastal lands and rapidly climbing up to 2,485 meters (8,152 feet above sea level), the park has a variety of unexplored ecosystems. It is nestled in the Nombre de Dios mountains and has an area of 1,073 square kilometers in area. The park gets its name from one of its two peaks (Pico Bonito mountain is perhaps the most difficult to climb the country). In this huge rainforest-covered mountain (perhaps the highest mountain facing the sea anywhere on the Caribbean coast from Colombia to Florida), the wildlife is present at all times. Jaguars, boas, monkeys and deer are constant characters. Along with them, hundreds of species of flora continue still waiting to be discovered by science. Pico Bonito is a symbol of La Ceiba and Honduras. From its peaks there are forty-six rivers that flow into the Caribbean Sea. One of them, the Cangrejal River, is famous for the strength of its currents, allowing rafting. To enter, the most convenient way through the Visitor Center, along the Cangrejal River. The park is managed by the National Park Pico Bonito Foundation.
