PICTURE BOOKS FIT FOR A PRINCE I am sure that William and Kate are going to be sent many copies of books about Princes…… The brothers Grimm’s “Frog Prince”, Babette Cole’s “Prince Cinders”, Felix Alexander’s “The Golden Prince”, Nickelodeon’s “Dora Saves the Prince”, Oscar Wilde’s “The Happy Prince”, Paul Harrison’s “The Perfect Prince”, Robin O’Brien’s “Prince Edward’s Feast” or how about Wendy Cheyette’s “The Prince and the Potty”, but I think we should send the new little prince some wonderful picture books with the MADE IN AUSTRALIA label proudly attached. I would love your suggestions as well but I have started the conversation with my top ten. Would like it to be the top 20 but I will leave it up to you. 1. Starting with a Royal theme – “Queenie the Bantam” by Bob Graham. The new little prince can fall in love with Queenie like thousands of other Aussie kids. 2. “The Waterhole” by Graeme Base. Every little prince should know about floods and droughts – even if he lives in the UK. 3. Pamela Allen’s series about “Grandpa and Thomas”. I am sure that Charles will love these books. 4. Mem Fox has to be there – you decide between “Where is the Green Sheep?” or “Possum Magic” – ready for a royal tour and a farm visit, or a koala cuddle. 5. “Wombat Stew” by Marcia Vaughan – so Australian and who can resist the song at the end? 6. “Annie’s Chair” by Deborah Niland. Such a great story and a reminder that they introduced the famous legislation to allow a first born woman into the “chair”. It wasn’t needed this time but it is there for the future. 7. “Henry and Amy” by Stephen Michael King – other than it is a fabulous book, Stephen has the perfect surname and maybe the prince will be named Henry. I think it is on the list of “maybes”. 8. Anything by Margaret Wild – but sticking to the baby theme I will go for “Babs the Baby and Fog the Dog”. 9. “Who Sank the Boat” by Pamella Allen. I know she already made the list, but every prince has to learn his animal sounds and this introduces cows, pigs, sheep, donkeys and one very heavy mouse! 10. Last but not least “Dougal the Garbage Dump Bear” by Matt Day, so the little prince can see that happiness is everywhere, not just in a palace. Please send in your submissions – the prince’s literary development depends on it.
