PIERSON DAUGHTERS (Hamilton, Ontario, Canada) - 16 September 1978 - Photographed while she was entering the Welland Canal from Lake Ontario at Port Weller, Ontario, Canada.. In this photo she was in operation with the new wheelhouse that had been added at Port Weller over the winter of 1977/78 at Port Weller.. Original Kodachrome slide by Don Dube.. This ships career began in 1923 when she was built at Cleveland, Ohio, by the American Shipbuilding Company as CHARLES M. SCHWAB for the Interlake Steamship Company of Cleveland, Ohio.. She entered service on 13 August 1923 when she loaded her first cargo of coal at Ashtabula, Ohio for Duluth, Minnesota.. Over the winter of 1960/61 CHARLES M. SCHWABs original stern and engine room was removed and a new 72 foot hull which was joined to the 1942-built stern of the former T-3 tanker GULFPORT was welded to what remained of her original hull.. GULFPORT had been built at Sparrows Point, Maryland for service in WWII. After the war she was sold into merchant service however by 1959 she was retired from service and sold for scrapping.. She was purchased from the scrappers by the Interlake Steamship Company and brought to the Great Lakes via the new St. Lawrence Seaway and laid up at Lorain, Ohio.. In June of 1961 CHARLES M. SCHWAB re-entered service longer, more powerful and capable of hauling much larger cargoes. Her original stern was scrapped at Ashtabula, Ohio along with GULFPORTs original bow and cargo section.. In August 1975 after 15 additional years with Interlake, CHARLES M. SCHWAB was sold to Robert Pierson Holdings Ltd., of Toronto, Ontario (The Soo River Company), re-registered Canadian and renamed PIERSON DAUGHTERS.. Over the winter of 1976/77 a new wheelhouse replaced her original one which is seen in this photograph. In August 1982 after Pierson Holdings went out of business, she was sold to P&H Shipping Ltd of Mississauga, Ontario and renamed BEECHGLEN.. In September she returned to service and went on to sail an additional 11 seasons for P&H.. On 22 December 1993 however she, like many other Great Lakes classics, reached the end of her career when she laid up in retirement at Owen Sound, Ontario.. On 26 August 1994 the tug KAY COLE towed her out of Owen Sound and on the 30th they arrived at Port Maitland, Ontario where over the months that followed she was cut up for scrap..
