You can find his/her number and e-mail at nysenate.gov. TALKING POINTS, if calling: • Midwives and consumers AGREE that new legislation is needed to remove barriers to establishing successful Birth Centers. • Birth Center regulations need to be updated to match industry standards for quality and safety. • Birth Centers give NY families more options and are cost effective. • Bring the bill to a full Senate vote this week! SAMPLE LETTER, Personalize, Cut and Paste into Email I am writing to ask for you to support passage for S7121, the Birth Center Bill, sponsored by Senator Hannon. The bill needs its third reading and Senate vote to ensure passage this session. Your support is critical. The bill will result in better regulations for establishing birth centers. Midwives and maternity care consumers all agree the current regulations are cumbersome and contain unnecessary barriers to creating successful birth centers. Currently there are only two functioning birth centers in the whole state. Using the national standards of the American Association of Birth Centers as the basis for new regulations, New York can bring its regulations up to industry standards. Women and newborns will benefit from more safe options for reproductive health care. NY state will benefit by developing a health care delivery system that has been shown to be both cost effective and high quality, while boosting local jobs and the economy. Birth Centers and midwifery care are key solutions to the problems of maternity care shortages, as well as improving health disparities in urban or rural areas, and across socio-economic and cultural spectra. It is for these important reasons I urge you to lead the Senate to pass S7121 this session.
