PLEASE CLICK ON THE CONTINUE READING TO READ THE ENTIRE STORY CAT PICASSOS SHOW A SUCCESS! The Cat Picassos art evening held at the British Embassy last Thursday was a very successful event, and the sum of BD2,500 was raised during the evening from the sale of artworks, which will go towards the Society’s CNVR neutering and the cat enrichment programmes. Attendees were welcomed with a Purrfect Punch refreshment provided by African & Eastern and offered a selection of delicious canapés from the Diplomat Radisson Blu which tempted everyone’s appetites. A Piece of Cake created a specially-themed “cat” cake with the BSPCA logo, balls of wool and images of cats prowling around the cake. Throughout the evening guests were treated to musical entertainment by guitarist Hassan Eid who played jazz and bossa nova to set the tone and the dance routines performed by the students of the Victoria Dance School were very popular with all. Of course the focus of the evening was the artwork – that of the cats at the shelter; Fergus, the British Ambassador’s own family cat; and from locally based artists who had donated their own works to the charity. Each of the cat’s works were mounted and framed in coordinating colour schemes, complete with photograph and biography and ready for purchase. Fergus, the Embassy cat had excelled himself with bold sweeps of patriotic red, blue and white emulating the Union Jack! All the framed pictures from each of our famous cat artists were sold and one munificent gentleman bought 11 of their paintings! Attendees were amused with a video featuring Fergus interacting with the iPad application that allowed the felines to produce their artwork. Paintings by Sheikh Rashid bin Khalifa Al Khalifa, Abbas Al Mousawi, Meriel Cooper, Bianca, Shanaz Fiaz, Irina Averois, Feryal Al Bastaki, Arthur D’Souza, Cheryl Nielson, Mairi Thomas, Rose Krauser, John Boardman, Gill Goode, Jacqueline de Freitas, Carrie Sauze, Jacqui Jones and a lithography by David Roberts were all put up for auction on Facebook prior to the event and on the evening were snapped up by guests keen to take home an original piece of art. His Excellency the Ambassador welcomed the attendees and introduced the BSPCA’s CNVR video which showed the neutering programme in action. The brief video, which was put together by Penny Erickson, brought the scheme to life for the attendees and we hope it inspires people to support the programme. By attending our fund raising events it means the Society can raise money to restart the programme, which has been put on hold as the funds donated by the UK Dogs Trust have been fully utilised. We send huge thanks to the 17 wonderful artists who donated 30 pieces of lovely art, and everyone else involved in organising the evening including artist, Carie Sauze, who was very supportive from the beginning and a big help with displays and creative ideas. And last but not least, an EXTRA SPECIAL THANK YOU to HE Mr Iain Lindsay, the Ambassador and Mrs Bridget Lindsay, Anne and Claire and the Embassy staff (and of course the talented Fergus!) for making it all possible. We would also like to thank our sponsors for the evening: the Diplomat Radisson Blu, African & Eastern, Tayeb Abbas of Tayeb Artistic Frames, Nonie Coutts and Words Bookstore, all of whom kindly donated funds, materials or services. Thanks also go out to our generous supporters who provided such fabulous raffle prizes: i-Machines, the Kempinski Grand & Ixir Hotel Bahrain, Al Areen Palace & Spa, Patrick Hair Salon, Trader Vic’s, Bushido, the Mövenpick Hotel, the Lost Paradise of Dilmun, Al Ghalia Group and Upstairs Downstairs. Without their generous help we would not be able to hold functions such as these. Special thanks go to Tayeb Abbas of Tayeb Frames in Budaiya who did a sterling job for us, beautifully framing all the artwork in double quick time at a greatly reduced rate and in the process turning our cats’ creative efforts into real works of art! Thank you so much Tayeb for your very helpful assistance and your patience. And finally thanks to everyone who purchased tickets for the event or bid for a painting – we really appreciate your coming along and making our first ever Art Evening a resounding success! The REALLY great news is the BD2,500 raised on the sale of the donated art ... how brilliant is that? Attendees were delighted with the lovely and innovative evening, and are already asking when we will stage the next one. The project was conceived by PENNY ERICKSON and our thanks go to her for spending a great deal of her time with all our cats, encouraging and nurturing their creative skills, which was a very time-consuming job, so that they could produce the paintings for the event! Our thanks as well for the hours of planning and organising it took to put on this great event!
