PLEASE INSTALL CAMERAS TO BUST THE CRIMINAL DRIVERS! NZF Group to probe bus fires August 19, 2013 | Filed under: Fiji News | Posted by: newsroom By MAIKELI SERU The Fiji Bus Operators Association is investigating recent bus fire incidents here in the Central Division. While there are allegations that e-ticketing consoles are causing the fires, the association’s general secretary, Rohit Latchan, said they were trying to ascertain why no such incidents were taking place in the North and West. He said almost all buses had e-ticketing consoles. “That is our concern,” Mr Latchan said. “The bus fire incidents had tainted the bus industry and especially Nasese Buses Limited. The company had invested substantially in their buses and the incidents had tarnised their image. This is not good because people will think twice when choosing buses to board.” In Suva alone, bus fires incidents were almost occurring weekly – the latest took place last Thursday in Samabula, Suva, where kindergarten students and parents escaped a potential bus blaze. A parent had alerted the driver that there was smoke coming from the engine compartment. Authorities alleged this was caused by an electrical fault. “We cannot rule out yet if the eticketing consoles contributed to the fires. We want to know why there are no bus fires in the North because they also have eticketing machines,” he said. Meanwhile, more Nasese buses were cleared to resume operation after their entire fleet was grounded last Thursday following the Samabula incident. The company’s director, Jack Kumar, said they would remove consoles from their buses and ensure thorough checks on their fleet to prevent another incident. Land Transport Authority spokesperson, Iliesa Sokia, said investigations had also started on the qualification of personnel used to do wiring on buses and maintenance, and illegal accessories and connections, like music and lighting systems. Checks on grounded Nasese buses continue today.
