PLEASE PASS THIS ALONG TO YOUR GROUPS AND EMAIL LISTS! It is imperative that you make 3 calls TODAY to stop Common Core based accountability in Wisconsin. Assembly Bill 1 ( docs.legis.wisconsin.gov/2015/related/proposals/ab1 ) is a bill that holds public, charter, and voucher schools accountable to the state of Wisconsin by using Common Core aligned Smarter Balanced assessments. This, in effect, enshrines Common Core and Smarter Balanced in Wisconsin and makes the repeal of Common Core in Wisconsin, which Scott Walker had promised much more difficult. I want to make it very clear: Governor Walker wants this bill to pass. I also want to make it very clear: This is in direct conflict to his supposed opposition to Common Core standards. It is clear that the Governors office has put pressure on Assembly leadership, including Speaker Robin Vos and Education Committee Chairman and AB1 author Jeremy Thiesfeldt to pass this bill as Walker sees it as potentially advancing his presidential ambitions. You can get a bunch more background on what is wrong with AB1 at Stop Common Core In Wisconsin. ( stopcommoncoreinwisconsin/why-accountability-bill-ab-1-must-be-stopped/ ) Our calls for Monday, January 12th will be to: Rep Jeremy Thiesfeldt, Assembly Education Committee Chair - (608) 266-3156 (also email Rep. Thiesfeldt at [email protected]) Rep Robin Vos - Speaker - (608) 266-9171 (also email Rep. Vos at [email protected]) Governor Scott Walker - (608) 266-1212 (also email Governor Walker at [email protected]) You can use a message similar to the following: “I understand that Governor Walker has made the School Accountability Bill his top priority for this legislative session and that significant pressure is being exerted on assembly leadership including education committee chairman Thiesfeldt to pass this bill. I would like to remind you that the job of an assemblyman is to represent their constituents, the people of this state, and not to do the governors bidding. I object to AB1 because it enshrines the Common Core aligned Smarter Balanced assessments as the means for making unfair judgements about teachers and schools. Schools and teachers should be accountable to parents and communities through their school boards and not to the state of Wisconsin. Please do what you can to pull this bill from consideration. Please pass my comments on to the Assembly Education Committee during the meeting on January 14th. Please try to make all three calls, but make sure to call Rep. Thiesfeldt as his committee will be hearing testimony and deciding on passing AB1 on to the Assembly this Wednesday, January 14th. Thank you! -- Jeff Horn Organizer, Prairie Patriots P.S. If you can make it to Madison the morning of Wednesday, January 14th at 10am in Room 417N of the Capitol there will be a hearing on AB 1. Your presence there will also help defeat this bill in committee.
