PLEASE PROMOTE WITHIN ALL MEMBERS OF OUR COMMUNITY: We have a community event for International Overdose Awareness Day THIS Friday the 29th August 1pm to 3pm at Hyde Park. At ‘The Remembrance Tree’ at the Lake street entrance of Hyde Park, a free event will be held at 1pm to 3pm; friends, family and all community members are welcome to attend and write a memorial to someone lost or affected by OD on the memorial tree, learn about how to recognise and respond to overdoses There are nearly four fatal opioid overdoses (OD’s) every day in Australia. For each fatality, there are at least 20 non-fatal overdoses. Non-fatal OD can result in serious sequelae such as brain or organ injury due to hypoxia, or injury due to nerve damage or occlusion of blood vessels resulting from prolonged unconsciousness. In Western Australia, 60% of fatalities due to OD occur whilst another person is present. Much morbidity and mortality can potentially be prevented simply by training drug users to recognise OD and respond appropriately as a first aider. Breaking down barriers to accessing ambulance services and dispelling myths around OD are also key elements to reducing the rate of injury and death. All are welcome to come down to Hyde Park: have a chat with peer-workers, get some info and enjoy a free BBQ. As a community we can all raise awareness to reduce the loss of a family member, friend and other members of our community.
