PLEASE READ AND SHARE A narrow escape from a serious cycle accident. Always the same story - even though I have two bright headlights and was cycling through a very well lit city centre junction, the driver of the car that came the other direction assumed he has right of way. Without indicating and definitely without right of way he turned across my lane while i was 10 feet away and cycling at a fair pace. Needless to say, despite new brake pads, New cables and the most evasive cycling i have performed to date, I smashed straight into the side of his car. Somehow, I landed on my feet unharmed. My bike was not so lucky - definitely took the impact for me. However, I turned to find the driver speedily driving away! Cheers. Traffic is bad at this time in Manchester so i threw my bike to the pavement and gave chase to the ill offender. I caught up. Safe to say, I didnt smash his windscreen in with my holstered bike lock, as what i found in the car were three quivering young men. Shocked to the core by the sudden realisation of the near consequences of his ill judgement, the driver looked horrified, terrified, histeric. Good. Thats one more driver now fully appreciative of the fragility of a human body and will forever more view with open eyes what is happening on the road. But why does it take for such a close encounter for this to be communicated to drivers? The consequences may have been a lot more severe. You would then be reading a small article in a content filler column in a local newspaper about this incident as I wouldnt be here to write it myself. DRIVERS - JUST BE AWARE OF THE POTENTIAL CONSEQUENCES OF TREATING CYCLISTS AS LESS ROAD WORTHY.
