PLEASE SHARE: And so our Minister for Health Leo Varadkar has just returned from Miami to sort out the bed crises in Irish hospitals. He states that he knew a long time ago that a bed crises was looming in January. He also states that the bed crises will get worse in the coming weeks! He states that hes sick to death of this problem, quite frankly And he states that we must all put our shoulders to the wheel to help resolve this crises! Our reply to you Mr Varadkar is: Why did you go to Miami if you were aware of the crises? Why did you not jump on the first plane home as soon as you knew there was a crises? Why did you and your government close Roscommon hospital which has led to even more overcrowding and pressure on the regional hospital in Mullingar? Why did you and your government down grade Nenagh Hospital which has led to over even more crowding in the Regional Hospital in Tullamore? Why do you and your government down grade so many hospitals throughout Ireland which has led to serious overcrowding and even more pressure on the remaining hospitals in Ireland? Why did you and your government close so many beds throughout the remaining hospitals in Ireland? Why did you and your government cut the funding towards home care packages allowing people to be cared for at home rather than remain in a totally unsuitable environment in acute hospital settings? Why did you and your government cut funding for the fair deal packages allowing elderly people to go to nursing homes rather than take up acute hospital beds sometimes for months on end at a cost of almost €1000 a night per patient? Why did you and your government introduce a recruitment embargo in the HSE? Why did you and your government decide that intern nurses and midwives were only worth paying €6.49 an hour knowing these people do almost the same duties as that of qualified staff? €2 less than the minimum wage!! Why did you and your government force tax after tax and pay cut after pay cut on your nurses and midwives forcing the majority of us to emigrate? Why have you and your government not intervened in the latest bully boy tactics by the NMBI demanding that the nurses and midwives pay an extra €50 to our registration fees on top of the annual €100 fee? Which by the way we certainly arent going to pay! How can you possibly say that youre sick to death of the problem? You will never know what its like to lie for hours on end waiting for a bed when youre sick in a public hospital! You are fortunate enough that in the event that become ill, youll be whisked to the nearest private hospital where there will be no waiting times! How dare you say that youre sick to death of the problem when many of your people are quite literally sick, some of them to death on a hospital trolley if theyre lucky or quite possibly forced to endure a hard chair in our over crowded hospitals! And how can you have the audacity to tell all of us to put our shoulders to the wheel when for so long we have worked ourselves quite literally to the bone, especially during this crises, whilst you were sunning yourself in Miami! The solution is obvious. Stop throwing money aimlessly at the Health Service. The cost of keeping a person in an acute hospital bed is ten times more than the funding for a nursing home or home care! Start paying your staff decent salaries so that beds can be manned and our highly skilled and highly qualified staff that you forced to emigrate can return home! Start looking at staff the top who sometimes have absolutely no job description and yet are earning in excess of €80,000 a year! There are many people in this category! Cut overpaid unnecessary jobs in management. Put these people back on the frontline! Reduce the level of unnecessary admin! Sometime a ratio of 5 admin staff to 1 nurse! Release that money to ensure that your sick are cared for properly in our Irish Health Service! Stop spending our hard earned money to pay off banking debts that the Irish people did not create and youll find well have much more money in the kitty to spend on your own people rather than banks! Put your people first for once! And at the same time you might want to consider the governments overpaid exorbitant salaries and reduce them significantly with immediate effect! You might also take responsibility for this crises! For once you and the government must take accountably for your actions! Thats something thats unheard of in Irish politics today! There are many ways to resolve this crises! Just ask any nurse or midwife on the frontline and well show you how! Yours, The completely overworked and underpaid Nurses and Midwives of Ireland!
