Harold Lepidus *************************************************************** Tom Rush: No Regrets Award-winning documentary celebrates the life and career of iconic musician Tom Rush in its Boston-area premiere A new documentary exploring the life, music and career of folk music icon Tom Rush will have its Boston-area premiere on Saturday, June 28, 2014 at the Regent Theatre in Arlington Massachusetts. Following the screening, the Mr. Rush and the filmmakers will hold a Q&A session. Tom Rush began his career in music as part of the 1960s folk music revival in Boston and Cambridge, most notably at Harvard Squares famed Club 47 coffeehouse which also launched the careers of folk-and-blues legends Joan Baez, Taj Mahal and Maria Muldaur, among others. Widely credited with ushering in the singer-songwriter era, Rush helped launch the careers of James Taylor, Jackson Browne and Joni Mitchell by being the first to record and popularize their music. The film had its world-premiere screening at the 2013 New Hampshire Film Festival last fall, where it was awarded Best New Hampshire Documentary. The 83-minute story is told mostly by the musician himself, in his trademark self-deprecating and humorous style, as he traces his life from his boyhood in Concord, New Hampshire, to his current life as a still-touring musician. In addition to Rush, the film features interviews with James Taylor, Boston Disc Jockey Dick Summer and recording industry pioneer Jac Holzman. In putting my own act together and presenting myself, Tom was definitely the model for it, James Taylor remembers. He was so seminal, so central to that folk music movement. Jac Holzman, founder and CEO of Elektra Records, recalls Rushs time at the label. Tom was best of class and would lead and inspire ultimately many other artists on the label. Of course, there is also the music. The film features Tom performing many of the songs he made famous, in intimate settings like Cambridges Club Passim (formerly Club 47) as well as the 2012 sold-out concert at Bostons Symphony Hall. Rare footage from a 1984 Symphony Hall show is also featured. Musical highlights include a stirring performance of Joni Mitchells Urge for Going, Childs Song, Panama Limited, Mother Earth and Rushs own hit, No Regrets. “We were certainly aware of Toms music as college students in the late 70s,” said the film’s co-producers/co-directors Todd Kwait and Rob Stegman. “Through the production of this film and other collaborations, we have come to know him as a consummate professional, but more important, as a charming and really funny guy.” This production involved shadowing Tom on the road performing in Colorado and Massachusetts, as well as revisiting many of the spots important in his life, in New Hampshire, Vermont and of course, Boston and Cambridge. The centerpiece of the production is an ambitious 6-camera, live recording of Rushs 2012 return to Symphony Hall as he celebrated his 50 years in music. Kwait and Stegman first met as freshman at Boston University in 1977 and this is their second feature-length collaboration. Their first, For the Love of the Music: the Club 47 Folk Revival chronicled the Cambridge Folk Music scene from 1958-1968, and received several awards on the film festival circuit. Other productions from the pair include music videos and the aforementioned Tom Rush Celebrates 50 Years of Music and Tom Rushs 2013 Symphony Hall concert. Kwait is President of Ezzie Films, and previously produced and directed “Chasin Gus Ghost,’ a history of jug band music, and “Vagabondo” about singer Vince Martin. Stegman is President of BlueStar Media, and has been producing for corporate communications, broadcast and cable television for over 30 years; most notably Old Ironsides Returns to Sea for the History Channel and Tim Allen: Just for Laughs for TLC. Mr. Kwait and Mr. Stegman also operate Kingswood Records, an independent record label dedicated to preserving the musical traditions featured in these films. ********** For more information or to view the films trailer, go to: tomrushfilm For more information on Ezzie Films, visit EzzieFilms For more information on BlueStar Media, visit bluestarmedia For more information on Kingswood Records, visit kingswoodrecords
