POETRY MASTERCLASSES AT YARDSTICK FESTIVAL Budding and emerging poets and authors are invited to take part in a creative writing masterclass with two of the finest exponents of poetry around, Lorna Goodison and Nick Makoha. Spaces are available for two-hour poetry workshops at Bristol Central Library with Nick Makoha on Friday, June 28 from 2pm and at Bath Central Library with Lorna Goodison on Saturday, June 29 from 11 am. LORNA GOODISON Jamaican-born poet Lorna Goodison is internationally recognised as one of the foremost Caribbean writers. Lorna has received much recognition and many awards for her writing in both poetry and prose, including the Commonwealth Poetry Prize (Americas Region), the Musgrave Gold Medal, the Jamaica 50 Cultural Medal of Honour and one of Canada’s largest literary prizes, the British Columbia National Award for Canadian Non-Fiction for From Harvey River: A Memoir of My Mother and Her People. NICK MAKOHA Nicholas Makoha is a dynamic writer and poet who was born in Uganda and has lived in Kenya, Saudi Arabia and currently resides in London. Makoha’s debut, The Lost Collection of an Invisible Man, In launched the Flippedeye pamphlet series (2005). Nick recently received an Arts Council England award to work on his first full collection. He is one of ten contemporary poets in the UK to have been selected for Spread the Word’s Complete Works development programme. He is the director of the Youth Poetry Network – through which he provides a charismatic and responsive approach to workshop facilitation in schools.
