POETRY WRITING WORKSHOP – EMMA NEALE SUNDAY 1ST DECEMBER 2013 Hosted by the Caselberg Charitable Trust (proceeds to Trust) When: Sunday 1ST DECEMBER 2013 Time: 9:00 am - 4:30 pm Venue: Art Workshops Studio, Broad Bay, Dunedin Park: 7, Frances Street, Broad Bay Meet: 9.00am. 7, Frances Street, Broad Bay Cost: $120.00 ($100.00 for Caselberg Trust members) (includes morning and afternoon tea/coffee, bring own lunch) Max no 10: About the Tutor: Emma Neale is a writer, editor and occasional creative writing tutor. A previous Burns Fellow, she is the author of five novels and four collections of poetry. Her collection The Truth Garden (Dunedin: Otago University Press, 2012) won the Kathleen Grattan Award for 2011. Her most recent novel, Fosterling (Auckland: Random House 2011) was short-listed for the youth category of the Sir Julius Vogel Award for Science Fiction and Fantasy 2011. She lives in Dunedin with her young family of two vigorous boys, one vociferous cat, and one tolerant husband. The Workshop: The one- day workshop will involve reading previously published poets selected by the co-ordinator; and group feedback on your own fresh drafts. We will also try various writing prompts and on-the-spot writing exercises, including a group composition. Although we will workshop poems previously written by participants, the main aim is to get you working on new material, for you to take away and refine in your own time. Two weeks before the workshop, please submit, by email, ONE poem that you would like to have discussed by the group (no longer than 40 lines, to and bring along ten copies on the day. Please also bring along only two copies of another, separate poem that you would be happy to have tinkered with in a collaborative exercise. Participants should also bring: one small object that has sentimental value, and which theyre prepared to talk about. For a separate exercise, please also bring scissors, a black felt pen, and Sellotape. To broaden everyones sense of poetry and acknowledge all of those who have come before us, please also bring a favourite single page poem by a favourite author to read to us all — and be prepared to explain why its a personal poetic touchstone. (It would be a good idea to practise reading the poem aloud first: to get the lines and phrasing as clear as possible on the air, for the ear.) This Workshop is suitable for beginner through to advanced writers. CHECK LIST: One poem by you, emailed in advance. Bring ten copies on the day. Another poem by you. Bring two copies on the day. A small, significant object and a short explanation of its importance to you. (You dont have to write this down; it can be off the cuff.) Scissors. Sellotape. Black felt pen. A favourite, one page poem by a favourite author. Writing tools.
