POLICE OFFICER ALLEGED TO HAVE MURDERED GIRLFRIEND A 32-year-old police officer based in Maun, on Tuesday night (October 7), is alleged to have shot to death his girlfriend. The officer is recuperating at Letsholathebe Memorial Hospital following a suicide attempt. Botswana Police Service’s chief public relations officer, Assistant Commissioner Christopher Mbulawa confirmed in an interview that they received a report around 9 p.m Tuesday night that a woman had been murdered at Botshabelo ward in Maun. Assistant Commissioner Mbulawa said the deceased was a student at GIPS University in Maun and a short gun could have been used to kill her. He said the police managed to arrest the suspect, who is a police officer. Mr Mbulawa said the suspect survived the suicide with injuries to his neck, adding that police investigations were on-going to establish what could have been the cause of the incident. The deceased originated from Maun while the suspect was from Masukwane in the North East. Assistant Commissioner Mbulawa appealed to the public to join hands with the police in the fight against crime noting that together they could win the battle. He said members of the public should be involved in crime prevention committees where they could learn telling signs of suicidal tendencies so as to intervene in time. He also appealed to members of the public to seek professional counseling and support if they have social problems. (BOPA)
