POLICE in Hull are warning the public about the threat of opportunist offenders following the theft of Christmas presents from a car on Stanbury Road, Hull between 1620hrs & 1745hrs on 30/11/14. The victim left their cream Fiat 500 car secured on the roadside while visiting someone in the area. While unattended an unknown offender approached the car and smashed a window before reaching in and stealing a handbag from under the passenger seat and a bag of Christmas presents which had been left on display on the rear seat of the vehicle. This is one of the first incidents were presents have been stolen from a vehicle in the area &the force are keen to ensure it is the last. PC Andy Allen, Crime Reduction Officer in Hull: This is a great time of the year when people head out to pick up the perfect gifts for their loved ones or drop off those perfect gifts to friends and family. Unfortunately as this case highlights it can be a field day for thieves too who are always on the look out for items on display they can steal and sell on. I don’t want to see thieves steal your thoughtful gift and would therefore urge everyone to take a moment before they leave their cars to remove any valuable or tempting items from display in your car and ensure you lock it when you leave it unattended. “I would also urge people not to buy gifts offered to them at knocked down prices, as they may well be items that have been taken from a car or stolen from a house. • Don’t leave anything on display in your car, as even a plastic bag or a coat on a back seat could appeal to thieves. • Remove your in-car electrical equipment • Take all your belongings with you when you leave the car. If this isn’t possible store items within your car boot. • If out shopping try to park in secure car parks with CCTV and security or well lit busy locations.
