PORTLAND FILM WORKS will be holding workshops this Winter! PFW “Music Video Workshop Outline A class designed to teach the basic skills needed to create a music video. The class will be one night a week over a 10-week period from January 5th until March 16th. Three instructors would be on-hand. Faculty includes award-winning filmmakers from the Portland community with producing experience of 8 local feature films and a plethora of documentary, shorts and music video experience. Class Outline: One of the best ways to promote your music is through a music video. For artists and filmmakers, this comprehensive workshop examines how videos are created, produced, directed, and distributed. You have the opportunity to make a music video from concept to finished product. Lectures and discussion feature both screenings and guest speakers, and address such topics as the creative process, how to write a treatment, budgeting, special effects and post-production issues. Concurrently, you learn to develop the skills necessary to produce and direct your own music video and promote it on the web using various online tools and resources, including YouTube, MySpace, and others. Prerequisite: No previous production experience is needed, however students must have access to editing equipment and a basic understanding of how to use editing software. PFW “Producing Workshop Outline A class designed to teach the basic into advanced skills of producing for film. The class will be one night a week over a 10-week period from January 5th until March 16th. Three instructors would be on-hand. Faculty includes award-winning filmmakers from the Portland community with producing experience of 8 local feature films and a plethora of documentary, shorts and music video experience. Class Outline: Producing is the first step toward understanding how to create your projects. From visualization to completion, understanding and streamlining the producing process is integral to any film project. This comprehensive course evaluates effective producing measures with a distinctive focus on the Indie ethos of the Northwest. Lectures will guide students through pre-production into production and finally to post-production and distribution. Budgeting, scheduling, casting, location scouting, SAG, the editorial process, distribution and festivals will be covered in this class. Echoing the process of a creative project, the class will be taught in a progressive manor starting with pre-production. Students with a project already in mind are welcome. Industry standards will be taught along with a distinctive focus on producing your Indie project in the Northwest, including DIY techniques to get your project into completion .Whether it is a narrative feature, short, documentary, music video or commercial, this class will give you the foundation to execute your project. Prerequisite: No previous production experience is needed. Students can come with or without current projects to work on. PFW “Finding Your Voice Workshop Outline A class designed to encourage hopeful directors to discover styles that best suit them, by exploring different directing styles and the techniques that make them unique. The class will be one night a week over a 10-week period from January 5th until March 16th. Three instructors will be on-hand for each course. The faculty includes award-winning filmmakers from the Portland community, with extensive experience working on feature films, documentaries, shorts, and music videos. One of the most overlooked aspects of film directing is style. In this course, we will bridge the gap between film production and film studies to explore different directing styles, creative concepts, and the technical details necessary to make a style unique. The intention of this course will be to bring focus to the language of cinema. Students will study various directors and break down exactly what it is that makes their styles unique. Select scenes from stylistic films will be re created in the studio. The intention of the class will be on the process of creative self-discovery for those who wish to direct their own films, and develop clear concepts that they can see through from the page to the screen.
