PORTUGUESE : THE PIONEERS OF SLAVE TRADE IN THE WORLD ! According to secular historians, in the 16th century, when Portuguese set foot in India / Kerala, with Colonial and religious motives, they brought with them many blacks ( native Africans ) with them, as slaves. ( All of them were baptized ,on capture of them !) ( probably, Portugal and Spain were the pioneers of slave trade & apartheid policies ! ) When Dutch captured Kochi in 1663, and the violent turn of events, Portuguese were asked to leave the territory immediately. As per one version, before leaving Kerala, they killed almost all the slaves. They left, to Lisbon or the islands on the out skirts of Kochi, with the hope of return, they buried their treasures in deep trenches, with the safe custody of these ‘departed slaves’ ( Kaappiri Muthappan ). The Kappiri with smoking cigar , is still resting on a wall and protecting their treasures ! ( Reference of such slaves can be read in the famous novel ‘Lanthan Batheriyile Luthiniyakal’ ,of Malayalam novelist N.S.Madhavan & English novel ‘ Maya’, written by George Thundiparambil of Fort Kochi, depicting the brutal murder of an African slave). This shows the hollowness of the claim of pro- Portuguese writers in Kerala that the ‘Synod of Diamper’ of 1599, AD.,was for eradicating social evils like untouchablity and for gender equality and Goan Latin Archbishop Dom Menezis, a great social reformer of Nazranis of Kerala.
