POSITION TITLE: Senior Exploration Geoscientist LOCATION: Rosebank, Johannesburg area, South Africa PURPOSE: To conduct regional studies in order to evaluate petroleum systems in the Africa region and mature identified leads to drill-ready prospects. To assist with the planning and drilling of prospects in the onshore and offshore. To carry out and peer review resource assessments consistent with sound industry practices and SPI exploration process through the integration of geological, geophysical, petrophysical and reservoir data. To provide technical presentations to partners and government authorities, as directed by the Exploration Manager. To plan and manage studies by geological service contractors in a time and cost efficient manner. To coach and mentor the junior geoscientists. REQUIRED OUTPUTS: FUNCTIONAL (The core content and deliverables of the position) - Participate in detailed and integrated geoscience interpretation of operated and non-operated acreage. - Provide structural, stratigraphic and geological facies input to accurately populate static reservoir models. - Provide geoscience input into SPIs Resource Statement and Prospect Inventory as necessary. - Carry out studies and provide geoscience input into acreage evaluation, prospect evaluation, well proposals, reservoir development studies and field development plans. - Provide sound geoscience input to lead, prospect and development planning to ensure an effective data acquisition and drilling programme. - Coach and mentor junior geoscientists. REQUIRED OUTPUTS: GENERAL (Overall objectives/Key Areas of Performance) - Provide the highest standards of collaborative support to the New Ventures Manager and Exploration Technical Manager. - Represent SPI interests in external dealing with contractors, consultants and industry forums. - Support SPI interests on joint projects – influence the operator in non-operated situations. - Report to Africa Exploration Manager functional geoscience matters. Desired Skills and Experience QUALIFICATIONS: - Bachelors degree in a geological or earth science subject is required. - Masters (MSc) or PhD degree in Petroleum Geology or Petroleum Geophysics is desirable (not compulsory). EXPERIENCE: - Technical experience and understanding of the upstream exploration business, particularly in the evaluation of new ventures/business development opportunities is required. - Fluency in written and spoken use of the English language is required. Knowledge of other languages would be an advantage. - Current and up to date software capability using Office and collaborative applications is required. Structural interpretation and mapping of seismic data, sequence stratigraphic analysis, multi-layer depth conversion methods, seismic QI/AVO analysis, correlation of log response to seismic data, highly competent user of workstation interpretation software (preferably Petrel), with some knowledge of seismic data management and SEG-Y data loading. - Prospect generation and maturation, integration of geological and seismic data using sequence stratigraphy techniques, assessment of prospective resources (volumes and risks). - Experience in working in sub-surface, predominantly exploration, evaluation teams is required. - Excellent workstation skills and current capability with geoscience interpretation and modelling software is required. - Expertise in Petrel, Petrosys and GeoX software would be an advantage.
