POSITIVE PERSPECTIVE By Ron McClung When I was in high school, I did not take physics. I wanted to be in a cappella choir, but a year of voice was a prerequisite. My schedule was full, so I went to my counselor. He asked what I wanted to do when I finished my education. I thought I might pursue a career in church music, so he asked, “Then why are you taking physics?” “It’s part of the college prep program.” “Well, if you are interested in music, let’s drop physics and sign you up for voice instead.” I’ve never been sorry about that choice because, although I did not pursue church music as a career, I did pursue ministry and church music has been a great part of my life. All that to say that I recently read a biography of Albert Einstein, the brilliant theoretical physicist. Or rather, I listened to it on CDs in my car while traveling back and forth to work and running errands around town. I have to admit I did not understand everything I read. The author did a great job of relating Einstein’s life and work, but his work was complicated. I did discover something unique about Einstein. Although he was a genius, his brilliance was tempered by humility. When he studied the universe, he saw a spirit “manifest in the laws of the universe – a spirit vastly superior to that of man, and one in the face of which we with our modest powers must feel humble.” While many people are impressed by miracles, Einstein was impressed by the absence of miracles. He observed that the cosmos follows laws, and that left him in awe. He believed in a “God who reveals himself in the harmony of all that exists.” Sometimes when working on a theory, he would ask himself whether, if he were God, he would have arranged the world in such a way. So while he was brilliant and confident in his knowledge, he also stood in awe of the Creator. That is a great place to begin your journey toward God, “because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him” (Hebrews 11:6 NIV). Anyone can come to him because you don’t have to be an Einstein to put your faith in an awesome God.
