POST 2 REGARDING MY PAYNE FAMILY My ancestor James Payne - TopicsExpress

POST 2 REGARDING MY PAYNE FAMILY My ancestor James Payne was brought to the Ozarks by his uncle Archibald Payne and helped out for a number of years, until James married Sophia Jane Berry of the Hooten Town area in 1856 and settled in Stone County near the Berrys. James had brothers who were also brought to the Ozarks from Carroll County, TN in 1841. Included were the oldest Jacob Payne. Jacob homesteaded land northwest of Nixa in September, 1854 and 160 years later that land is still in the Payne family!!! My cousin Charley Payne owns that property (we are 2nd cousins). Can we trace the Payne family back further than Archibald and his brother John? Yes their father was Lindsey Payne who came to TN from Pendleton District, South Carolina where his family lived at the time of the 1800 census. Beyond that is rather foggy, although I believe Lindseys roots were very likely in the colony of Virginia. The 3 photos you see: On the left is Sophia Berry and her spouse James Payne. After James death in 1882 Sophia married twice. School teacher James Alec Payne (my great grandfather) holds a book while his brand new bride Wealtha Williams Payne stand beside him in the very early 1890s. Yes Alec taught school for a number of years, and my great Uncle Walter Payne said that he got his certificate from Mr. Ed Bennett, who was slightly older than Alec. If you want to talk family tree take a look at this May 1893 photo of the widow of Archibald Payne---Elizabeth Betsy Young Yarbrough Payne (the old old lady seated in the middle and to the right). Behind the large family crowd is the house that pioneer Archibald Payne had built well before the Civil War! It sat on the hill south of the current Payne Cemetery near AA Highway, just west of Highway 160 and just south of James River. In this photo are old line Nixa, Richwood, and Ozark families such as: Payne, Aven, Yarbrough, Haguewood, Young, Whittington, West, Breazeale, McConnell, Norton and others. I may try to construct a partial list to go with the faces at a later time. I do know many of the people seen thanks to a lot of research and my great aunt Corine Meek Paynes help.
