POWER TO PLUNDER (SERMON PREVIEW) Prince Beelzebul, the king of darkness, sat in high guard over his palace grave. With a snarling confidence, he surveyed his many treasures: men and women, still reeling from the Fall, shot through with anxious thoughts and empty hopes, headed toward destruction. Demons filled the screeching halls, clamping down on their unstable possessions, in order to shield them from any rival – a prophet or sage – who might try to lure them away. The palace was hidden away in the corners of the land; the great gate was closed; the drawbridge was up; the stronghold was secure. And Prince Beelzebul, armed with the malice of a thousand evil spirits, liked to think that his goods were safe. But they weren’t. The true King arrived in the dead of night. And when He did, He spoke a word, and light burst forth in a thousand places. And people lived again – running free like a lively stream, glistening in the sunlight of a new day. Beelzebul’s arm was broken, and his goods were taken away. The true King has power to plunder. Remarkably, this powerful King invites others to participate in this great rescue operation: ‘Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters’ (Luke 11:23 ESV). We are called into fellowship with Jesus, and we are also called into partnership with Jesus – He does the gathering, but He graciously involves us in the process. Will you gather with Him? Or will you scatter against Him? Join us this Sunday as we think about these things in Luke 11:14-23. –BW
