PPRC NEWS BRIEF 31/01/14 Thirty Prep Three, Four and Six pupils of the Bethel Temple Nursery and Preparatory School on Friday 31st January 2014 benefited from lectures from the Political Parties Registration Commission (PPRC). In his welcome address, the Chairman of the Commission Hon. Justice Tolla Thompson applauded the idea of the school authorities for the request made to educate their pupils on the Mandate and activities of the Commission. He says the Commission is a creation of the 1991 Constitution of Sierra Leone. Speaking on the mandate of the Commission, the A.g. Registrar, Zainab Umu Kamara says the Commission exists to register, regulate, supervise and monitor the activities of Political Parties. This he says is done through regular meetings and consultations with Political Parties and key stakeholders. The work of the commission she says is not only for elections but it runs through the year. The Pupils were also lectured on the roles of the Youth and Gender Units within the PPRC, which focus on youth and gender advocacy/empowerment, political participation and the role of PPRC’s District Code Monitoring Committees. The visit is as a result of a request from the Head Teacher of the School Mrs. Rose-Marie Mboma-Sowa. Meanwhile, the PPRC’s Outreach Officer and a Local Communications Consultant have completed a tour of Bo, Kenema, Kono and Freetown. During the tour, the team met with Station Managers and senior staff of radio stations and also collected materials for the maiden edition of the Commission’s new series of self-produced radio programmes. The thirty-minute package will be broadcasted by radio stations nationwide, and will contain the mandate and activities of the Commission; and also current political updates in Sierra Leone.
