PRACTICE NOTES: Day 4 includes position switches (8.4.14) TEAM As posted earlier Monday redshirt defensive tackle Allan Carson is no longer with the team. Temperatures were high once again at Haslam Field as the sun was out in force. Many veteran member of the media have spoken about the strangeness of both Gibbs Hall and Stokely Center not being in the backdrop of footballs footprint. Construction crews continue to remove rubble and footers are being placed for the new dormitory now in hopes of concrete settling before winter time arrives. OFFENSE Notable position change (well see if this holds up or is just experimental) in freshman Jashon Robertson moving from defensive tackle to right offensive guard. Same first-team offensive line. The five working as the second-team unit included (l-r) Dontavius Blair, Marques Pair, Kyler Kerbyson, Jashon Robertson and Brett Kendrick. Running as second-team offensive skill were Joshua Dobbs, Derrell Scott, Johnathon Johnson, Marquez North, Josh Smith and Daniel Helm. Keep in mind these players will be juggled quite often, especially the receivers and tight ends given the tempo of offense thats expected. Alex Ellis was the first tight end up. The long and short of it: A pass protection drill saw freshman running back Jalen Hurd (6-feet-3) blocking senior running back Devrin Young (5-feet-8). Hurd kept his pad level low and managed to win the battle. Running backs coach Robert Gillespie caught walk-on Deanthonie Sumemrhill holding in the same pass-protection drill. Another freshman running back, Derrell Scott, got a brief lecture from head coach Butch Jones after allowing himself to be knocked off his feet in a thud (hit but don’t tackle) drill. Von Pearson made a nice juggling catch after outbattling cornerback Riyahd Jones for a deep ball thrown by Justin Worley. Josh Malone, star of the Orange & White game with six catches for 181 yards, heard from teammates after dropping a pass over the middle. Freshman wideout Vic Wharton, one of Tennessee’s less-heralded recruits, continues to make some impressive catches. However, Wharton did block on a pass play and Worley threw a pass to him with his back to the ball. Worley immediately ran over to Wharton to explain the mental bust. DEFENSE Notable position change with another member of the secondary moving up to linebacker as freshman Elliot Berry worked with linebackers. The son of James, who laser timed sub-4.5 at a Tennessee camp in his prep days, had been getting reps at nickelback. Freshman Dillon Bates gave Berry tips between drill reps. Several of the freshmen defensive backs still have a confused look in their eye but that is to be expected. Owen Williams was the first defensive tackle off the bench and came in for Danny OBrien. LaTroy Lewis and Jaylen Miller were the first defensive ends to spell Curt Maggitt and Corey Vereen. The second-team defensive backfield included LaDarrell McNeil, Lemond Johnson, Riyahd Jones, DAndre Payne and Malik Foreman....Butch Jones said after practice that the workout was so sloppy he wants the Vols to concentrate more on everything from their drills to the shower. Nine players were to be made available to the media but that was shot down by Jones. It sounded as though practice took a turn for the worse after media was dismissed. Passes dropped. Poor snaps. Etc. #GBO
