PREDICTIONS, like resolutions, should be avoided at this end of the year, if not permanently - so I wont make any. Let me say instead that I fear next years going to be even worse than the one were about to leave. I suspect two things will happen fairly soon, well before Autumns arrival. One, the Libs will dump Abbott as leader. Even with an emasculated ABC, Rupert controlling nine of the 12 metropolitan dailies, & mainstream TV full of nothing but trivia & reality, they still cant sell Tone to a significant part of the electorate. Women dont merely dislike Abbott, they hate him. The only thing nastier than a woman-hating priest is a woman-hating failed priest. If theyre halfway shrewd - and being money people, they are nothing if not that - theyll replace him with Julie Bishop. This will persuade many marginal female voters to stick with the party in Government. The Womens Weekly factor is not to be ignored. She has lovely frocks, can speak off the cuff without sounding like an adolescent schoolboy after a breakfast bong, and has managed to avoid looking silly in front of the cameras. The LNP under Abbotts direction would almost certainly lose at the 2016 election. With Bishop in charge, this is no certainty. Another four years with the IPA calling the shots will mean a country stripped of most of its remaining public assets. Doesnt really bear thinking about, does it. Happy New Year!
