PREPARE AND DONT MOURN THE LOSS I am going to talk about the power of preparation particularly for our children. Some years ago, I was a judge in a spelling bee competition. They had used 2 of my books, the parents were in the hall truly excited and looking forward to their children winning. The first prize was a scholarship. Which parents will not love that? As the children were being eliminated one after the other, it was easy to see disappointment written on the faces of the parents whose children failed. Really? So they all thought their children were going to win. Eventually, the winner emerged; the second place winner (child) was more confident but she quickly moved to second place with a slip. I remember writing and giving her a cheque of N5.000. This is because of that sad, winner takes it all syndrome, she got little or nothing cant remember now. It was my turn to talk to the parents. You deceived your children that they had good chances. Firstly you knew their weaknesses; they were not good in spellings. Next you failed to adequately prepare them by drilling them, teaching them and giving them the necessary psychological boost. How on earth did you think they will make it or did you just bring them for the fun of it. Some incidents that happened in my house showed me that as a parent I must take part in the preparation of my children for any examination or competition or else despite what I wish for them in my heart, the wish(es) will not come to pass. I will start with the ones they did not do well before their successes. More tomorrow. I thank God for my re-election as Financial Secretary; for making me a participant at the MBA colloquim and for Chukwu Chukwu getting down to final 13 from over 274 contestants.
