PRESIDENCY ROOTS FOR RELIGIOUS CARD AGAINST AREGBESOLA - APC The All Progressives Congress (APC) disclosed yesterday in Osogbo that competent source from Abuja has alleged that the Presidency instructed the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the State of Osun to intensify its religious campaign against governor Rauf Aregbesola in an attempt to persuade Christians to vote against him. The decision, APC was informed is said to have been taken at a meeting in the Presidency yesterday during their review of Aregbesola’s campaign footages with the mammoth crowds that explicitly demonstrate huge popular support for the governor. According to the source, the Presidency is particularly worried that Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola appeared to be waxing stronger in popular support and the only way to check that development was to intensify the use of the religious card. But unfortunately for the Presidency, as that decision was being taken in Abuja, the people of Osun were resoundingly rejecting any idea of religious hatred when hundreds of thousand of people, Christians, Moslems and traditional religionist alike celebrated their governor in one of the most marvelous crowd-pulling campaign rallies in Ilesha ever seen in Osun. The APC expressed sadness and deep concern that the Presidency, for any reason whatsoever, is playing with religious politics which is already causing grave problems for Nigeria in the phenomenon called Boko Haram. If Aso Rock is now instigating Christian religious hatred and bigotry against a component State Governor, are we sure it is not also using Boko Haram to its political advantage considering what is happening in the States of the North East where the insurgents are active?, the APC asked. The APC recalled, with deep suspicion of Presidency involvement, that only a couple of days ago, a Christian radical group that goes by the name of “Yoruba Christian Leadership Assembly” gathered pastors, evangelists and other clerics throughout Yoruba-speaking areas of Nigeria to Ile Ife to incite them to war against Islam and proclaim that what God sent Jonathan to do in Nigeria was to destroy Islam, and not to provide employment or good governance. This statement was recorded. But as the “Yoruba Christian Leadership Assembly” was fanning hatred amongst Christian leaders at Oduduwa Hall of Obafemi Awolowo University, other Christians leaders in Osogbo were rooting for Aregbesola because of his spectacular performance. Earlier, apex leadership of the Christian fold had endorsed Aregbesola including universally respected Pastor Adejare Adeboye of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Bishop David Oyedepo of Winners Chapel and Prophet S.K. Abiara all of who believe that Christians have no reason to dislike Aregbesola. In fact, in an uncommon endorsement of Rauf Aregbesola, Pastor Adeboye had said at a “Go-a-fishing Crusade”- “Osun is my root. I hereby promise 100% support in prayers believing that the Almighty God will use the tenure of governor Aregbesola to bring unprecedented development”. That “unprecedented development” is now indisputably registered in Osun by Aregbesola and the assistance of Pastor Adeboye’s prayers to God Almighty. So there is no reason why responsible Christians will vote against him “Only those who have made themselves surrogates of the PDP and their lies think they can use religious sentiment against Aregbesola in Osun. For the most part however, nobody is listening to them.
