PRESS RELEASE 12-08-2013 The National Campaign for Peoples’ Right to Information (NCPRI) condemns the introduction of the RTI amendment Bill in Parliament aimed at nullifying the Central Information Commission’s order declaring six political parties as ‘public authorities’. The bill provides for exempting political parties from the ambit of the RTI Act. The move to create a special exemption for political parties from the transparency law of the country violates the principle of equality. The NCPRI demands that the bill be subject to public consultation and debate, as assured by the government to the Parliament in 2009. At the very minimum, the bill must be referred to a Parliamentary Standing Committee in order to provide a platform for people to put forth their point of view on this important bill which will impact peoples’ fundamental right to information.
