PRESS RELEASE AQUINO VISITS NAIA TERMINAL 3, FINDS OUT WAYS TO EXPEDITE PROCESSING OF PASSENGERS MANILA, Philippines -- President Benigno S. Aquino III personally observed the operations at the Bureau of Immigration (BI) counters and assessed the needs of the BI during an ocular inspection at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) - Terminal 3 (T3) on Tuesday, October 7. Aimed at expediting the various processes being done at the country’s major ports and terminals particularly those being conducted by the BI, the President had a chance to talk with one of the Immigration Officers assigned in the T3. In their conversation, the Chief Executive asked Immigration Officer Rey Belle Denuna about the BI’s requirements that will help speed up the processing of passengers especially during peak hours. Denuna expressed to the President the need for additional passport readers. The President then jokingly said to Denuna, “Itext mo ako ‘pag dumating na”. The inspection was done on the sidelights of the welcome ceremonies for the arrival of the new A380 Airbus plane of Emirates Airlines. Aquino also chatted with several passengers and other government employees at one of the country’s premier airport. NAIA Terminal 3 has recently become the main airport for most of the big flights in and out of the country. Meanwhile, BI Spokesperson Atty. Elaine Tan said that more than 350 units of passport readers will hopefully be in use before the year ends to speed up the processing of passengers. The influx of the new units of passport readers will be coming in three batches that would ensure faster processing at the immigration lines. Tan also said that less than 100 passport readers are currently in operation, most of which were acquired during the Bureau’s last procurement in 2009. Each passport reader has only a lifespan of up to 5 years, and most have already exceeded their lifespan. Several readers were also donated by foreign embassies and airlines.
