PRESS RELEASE/FOLLOW-UP ANNOUNCEMENT For Additional Information, contact Rev. Nathan Jordan, 601-447-7575 or 601-583-9882 On Saturday, September 14, 2013 at 10:00 am, citizens of Palmers will peacefully march and demonstrate to claim our rightful share of services. The march begins at the McDowell Nance Convention Center at 120 Old Airport Road and continues to the Community Center at 225 Tatum Road (just under 1 mile). At our destination, we shall read a proclamation claiming our rights to services. The proclamation is prepared for distribution to the representatives of the City Council of Hattiesburg, the County of Forrest, the State of Mississippi, and the United States government. Citizens pay city taxes for infrastructure services (road systems, electricity, gas and water lines, sewers), public parks, libraries, fire and police protection, administrative salaries, among other things. Palmers Crossing residents pays city taxes, yet do not receive a fair return for its dollars. Our roads and sidewalks are poorly maintained and poorly lit, our electrical system is fragile and vulnerable to storms, our storm drainage pipes are inadequate and result in flooding, asbestos pipes carry drinking water to families and our school, sewage lines have not been completed to some of our residents, our soil and water is subject to contamination by the use of chemicals, our small park does not compare to other city parks that are well groomed, more accessible, safe and attractive; we have no library facility, and no youth recreation program activities or after-school learning centers. We invite and ask the press, public officials, city representatives, fire and police, and all citizens to join us, to witness this effort to bring attention to inadequate and unfair city taxation without adequate services. We claim a portion of the tax dollars that have been paid since annexation to be put into escrow for the purpose of upgrading desperately needed city services for the Palmers Crossing Community.
