PRESS RELEASE January 17, 2014 On January 16, 2014 the Easton Police Department responded to Spurry’s Tires in Easton about a possible credit card fraud. Upon the officer’s arrival it was learned that earlier that day Spurry’s Tires was contacted by phone by a subject who wanted to purchase $3445.00 worth of tires. The subject provided an American Express credit card number to charge the cost of the tires. The subject on the phone advised that someone would be sent to pick up the order. American Express denied the charges advising that the credit card information was stolen. Approximately 4:00 PM two males, later identified as 59 year old Leonard Elmonds Thompson and 54 year old Lawrence Byrd arrived in a white pickup truck to pick up the order. Thompson and Byrd, both of Baltimore MD, were then taken into custody and transported to the Easton Police Department. As the investigation continued it was learned that on January 13, 2014 a purchase for $2,925 worth of tires were made at K&K Tires, 230 North Washington Street. Upon making contact with K&K Tires it was learned that the same American Express credit card number was used to purchase the tires that was used at Spurry’s Tires. Both men were charged with the following: 2 counts of theft under $10,000 Theft Scheme under $10,000 2 counts of charging another’s credit card under $10,000 Thompson was released on a $10,000 unsecured bail. Byrd was released on his own recognizance.
