PRESS RELEASE Nairobi, Thursday, August 7, 2014 Government reiterates its support for women empowerment The government has reiterated its support for women empowerment in Kenya saying that it’s on course to ensuring that it delivers on its promise to support women achieving their rightful roles in the development of the country. Speaking during the Africa Leaders’ Summit – Investing in Women for Peace and Prosperity Forum in Washington DC, Devolution and Planning Cabinet Secretary, Ms. Anne Waiguru, affirmed the government’s position to empower women, citing them as a central figure in conflict resolution and promotion of peace in society. “It is a known fact that women play an important role in resolving conflicts and in Kenya they have played a critical role in peace processes including organizing peace meetings,” She said. The CS highlighted various interventions that the government has instituted to help empower women, singling out the Women Enterprise Fund, the Uwezo Fund and the 30 per cent Access to Government Procurement opportunities that give women an opportunity to develop socio-economically. She further noted that while the Constitution of Kenya demands that at least 30% of public sector positions must go to women, the Kenya Government is moving beyond just counting positions in affirmative action, to giving women key decision making positions. “Worth noting, women Cabinet Ministers have been designated to significant and previously male dominated mandates including the Ministries of Defense, Foreign Affairs and International Trade; Devolution and Planning; Lands, Housing, and Urban Development; Environment, Water, and Natural Resources; and the Ministry of East African Affairs, Commerce and Tourism,” She said.
