PRESS RELEASE: Oregon Arts Orchestra invited by mayors of Rome, Florence and Venice to perform in Italy The Oregon Arts Orchestra, under the direction of Cindy Harnden Petty, embarks Saturday on an 11-day concert tour of Italy. The group has been invited by the mayors of Rome, Florence and Venice to perform as musical ambassadors representing Oregon and the Northwest United States. The orchestra will be performing on the concert series “An American Celebration of Music in Italy”, designed to showcase outstanding American orchestras. The Oregon Arts Orchestra is comprised of musicians from the states of Oregon, Washington, Utah, and Montana. The members are a diversified group of professionals who by day serve many roles including physicians, teachers, architects, and administrators, but in the afternoon and evenings they come together to share their passion of music. These members have been specially selected for this group, and as a result, represent many orchestras of the region including the Oregon Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra, Newport Symphony, The Portland Jewish Community Orchestra, Marylhurst Symphony, Willamette Falls Symphony, Oregon Sinfonietta, Oregon Coast Chamber Players, the Oregon Mozart Players and the Salem Chamber Orchestra, The Northwest Civic Orchestra of Montana, and the Utah Wind Ensemble. The group is led by Cindy H. Petty, an internationally recognized conductor who has guest-conducted more than 20 orchestras worldwide. The Oregon Arts Orchestra’s Italy concert tour begins with a performance at Rome’s Chiesa Sant’ Andrea della Valle, the 17th century church where Giacomo Puccini set the first act of Tosca. The group will then continue on to Florence to perform at the Tettucio Baths Pavilion, an open-air pavilion of marble surrounded by gardens and fountains. The orchestra’s final performance will take place in Venice at the Loggia dei Cavalieri, a 13th century symbol of political power help by the nobles in the period of the free municipality. The repertoire of the Oregon Arts Orchestra features Giacchino Rossini’s “La gazza ladra Overture”, Domenico Cimarosa’s “Concerto for 2 Flutes in G Major”, Howard Hanson’s “Symphony no. 2” and the “Summer” and “Winter” movements from Antonio Vivaldi’s “Four Seasons”. The program will feature soloists Phyllis Louke and Kristin Killpack on flute, and Yvonne Hsueh on violin. A small Dixieland group will also be featured for street performances. In addition to their performance schedule, performers will have the chance to enjoy sightseeing and musical activities in their various stops including: Rome, Siena, Florence, Venice and Milan. In Cremona, the group will have a private showing and playing of Stradavarius instruments by the museum curator. This is the orchestra’s second European concert tour having previously performed to sold out crowds in Dvorak Hall (Czech Republic), Haydnshall, Minoritenkirche and in various churches throughout regions of Salzburg and Vienna.
