PRESS RELEASE SHERIFF’S OFFICE INVESTIGATES SHOOTING AT RURAL RESIDENCE At 12:07 hours on August 27, 2013, the Beltrami County Sheriff’s Office 911 Call Center received a panic phone call from a Frohn Township home approximately 6 miles east of Bemidji regarding a fight involving guns at the residence. As officers were responding dispatchers learned from the caller that shots had been fired. As officers neared the location Dispatch was told a Red Ford F350 pickup was leaving the scene. Deputies stopped the vehicle on Roosevelt Road SE as other officers continued to the scene. After securing the occupants of the Ford truck officers learned they had both the shooting victim and the shooter in the vehicle. The individuals were identified as Devin Craig Spears-Thomas and a juvenile male. Officers also responded to the Swenson Road SE residence and secured the location. Deputies learned the shooting occurred after a domestic dispute between Devin Spears-Thomas and his Wife Amy Spears-Thomas. Devin Spears-Thomas was flown to Duluth for treatment of his gunshot wounds. The juvenile male is being held by authorities pending the results of the investigation. No one else in the family was harmed and there is no on-going danger to the public. Preliminarily, Investigators have learned the juvenile male shot Devin during the domestic dispute. The Beltrami County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Leech Lake Tribal Police, the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, Minnesota State Patrol and the Bemidji Ambulance Service.
