PRESS RELEASE: Yesterday at approximately 2:00pm, Morgan County 911 began receiving multiple 911 calls in reference to a man running into traffic on Modaus Rd. SW in the vicinity of B&B Trailer Park. The first caller reported a man at B&B Trailer Park, running through the park yelling that someone was trying to kill him. The caller did not see anyone else with the man. Additional callers reported that the man was attempting to flag down and then get into cars on Modaus Rd. One caller reported that the man was nearly struck by traffic. Another caller reported that he had driven his vehicle into a ditch to avoid hitting the man. That caller advised the man was foaming at the mouth. Multiple Decatur police officers were dispatched in response to the calls. Sgt. Kyle Shelton, a K-9 officer, was the first to locate him. Bystanders got Sgt. Shelton’s attention and pointed behind a house on Modaus Rd. Sgt. Shelton spotted the man and drove across a clearing to reach him. Sgt. Shelton got out and approached the man. The man turned on Sgt. Shelton. Sgt. Shelton immediately saw that the man was foaming at the mouth and covered in sweat. The man charged Sgt. Shelton who retreated to his vehicle and deployed his dog. The dog took the man to the ground with a bite to his thigh. Sgt. Shelton was able to hold the man on the ground but not anything else until a second officer arrived. The two officers were able to handcuff the man. The officers recognized the man was experiencing some type of medical emergency and immediately called for an ambulance. The man was transported to the Decatur Morgan Parkway Campus Emergency Room. Hospital staff determined that the man was under the influence of cocaine and possibly suffering from a drug overdose. The man was admitted and treated for his condition and the dog bite to his thigh which was determined to be a minor injury. This evening, the man, identified as Jose Dorsett, was declared to be brain dead. Since his actions were believed to be the result of a medical emergency, no criminal charges were made against Dorsett. However, since the Decatur Police Department, who would normally conduct the investigation, was involved in the event, the Alabama Bureau of Investigation has been called in to investigate the cause of Dorsett’s condition. Any further inquiries should be directed to the Alabama Department of Public Safety.
